7-Eleven Big Bite Match Event

// July 6th, 2009 // Announcements, Fun Stuff, Videos

Last July 4, 2009, at the Rockwell Tent, 7-Eleven officially launched the Big Bite Match. Even though I was late for the event, I still managed to have a great time. The food was free, the music was good, the show was awesome, Goose was incredible, and oh, the food was free. Man, the food was good, too. I missed quite a bit, but I was told there was some speed talking or something, and some guy in a hotdog costume, making jokes packed with hot-dog-esque innuendo. Now, that’s something every man needs to see at least once in his life.

The crowd

There were a lot of people at the event, mostly supporters and media, but because the space was pretty big, it didn’t feel too stuffy, and I wasn’t exchanging bodily fluids with strangers, thought that might actually be fun.

They gave me camera envy.

The media coverage was intense. Since I write for this blog, I felt like I had to whip out my camera and take shots. When I saw the DSLRs and cameras worth hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pesos, I felt like a little guy in a locker room full of well endowed individuals. Ah well, I took my shots anyway.

No lines for late comers! BWAHAHAHHA!!!

These were food booths. There were two sets of these at perpendicular sides of the event area. They had corn, of which I had probably four cups, cotton candy, slurpees, mini-pizza, drinks, and of course bajillions upon bajillions of everyone’s favorite processed meat product, hot dogs! The line for the dogs never got short, though.

The hot dog stands never stopped serving dogs, and the lines never got shorter than about five people per booth. It was fine, though, since you could get one of those Big Bite Match boxes and fill them up; you could’ve shared with some friends or practiced at home or just plain celebrated glorious gluttony.

Say hello, guys!

Say hello, guys!

I got to go around and say hello to the great folks responsible for the event. If you were at the event, and got too stuffed with hot dogs, these are the guys to thank/ go after.

Tom "GOOSE" Gilbert

Tom Gilbert

Tom “Goose” Gilbert was the main event in this whole fiasco; people really came to see him in action. Not being the type of man to disappoint, Goose delivered as he devoured 10 dogs in a few minutes, totally destroying two other teams. Each team composed of two guys, sharing 10 hot dogs. Yes, two men on each team, with only 10 hot dogs between the two of them, and they were still spanked silly (figuratively, of course) by one Tom “Goose” Gilbert.

I was fortunate enough to get to talk to him, was able to ask him a few things about competitive eating.

Me with THE MASTER. I'm not worthy!

During the exhibition, I noticed him dipping the buns into whatever liquid he had in his cup. I assumed it was soda or something, for no apparent reason that I can come up with. I asked him what the best liquid was to use for dipping. He said you can generally dip it into anything. Yeah, dip your hot dog into any liquid to make it easier to stuff into your mouth. He said he generally uses water, if I remember correctly.

His nickname, “Goose,” was given to him by the organization to which he belongs. I’m not sure I’m allowed to mention it here so I won’t. He says that nicknames aren’t necessary for professional competitive eaters, but I decided to give all the guys on the leader boards nicknames. Once I get the information, I’ll be posting the updates here and I’ll give you guys nicknames. If you want a specific nickname, you better leave a comment here or something. As for me, I’m taking on the eating contest nickname of “The Meat.” I am no longer Bim. I am The Meat.

I bet they're pretty full right about now.

Here are the brave souls that went up against Goose. Little did they know that their efforts were futile, and that they’ll be spending a lot of time at the rest room a few hours later.

Also during the event, the promotional videos were shown, and everyone seemed to think they were hilarious. The one with Manny Paksiw and Freddie Root had lots of fans.

All in all, it was a great event. If this are just signs of things to come, then you should expect a whole lot more from 7-11 and the Big Bite Match Hot Dog Eating Contest. Come and be part of history. Run to the nearest 7-11, from Monday to Saturday up to August 15, from 11AM to 6PM and join up! Who knows, you might end up being the next Goose, yeah?
